Difference in stores

While we were in Budapest, we visited 3 or 4 grocery stores just to see if they had some fun items to bring back. Everything was well stocked – quite a relief after seeing crazy photos on the news of Americans emptying out shelves.

We got back to Stockholm, and while the grocery store in our neighborhood was basically fine, the two things that had been raided were the pasta aisle and the onions. I get the pasta, but onions? All the other vegetables were well stocked. I feel like I’m missing something.

Back from Budapest

My husband and I just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary in Budapest! We had a great time. Surprisingly, no virus-related problems. Flights were on time (and full), every place we wanted to go was open excluding one ruin bar because of a 100 person capacity restriction.

I’ll write my observations and thoughts on Budapest later. For now, here are a couple of pictures from Budapest’s Cat Cafe!

Episode 55 – Insects are Not Allowed as Food in Sweden

On this podcast episode about expats in Sweden, we talk to Patrick, who was born in Zimbabwe, raised in South Africa and now lives in Sweden. He really appreciates being here even though there are no penguins on the beach.

We also find out that the Swedish food agency does not allow insects to be sold as food (cricket flour, etc.). But if you’re in South Africa, feel free to have some worms!

Second class riff-raff

I went to Malmö, in southern Sweden, by train last weekend. My husband had a work trip, so I decided to tag along. However, his work paid for a first class train ticket and I bought a second-class train ticket. I’m just looking out the window anyway, so why spend extra money?

It turns out that there was a problem with the train that showed up, so my train car was a first-class car instead of second, so it turns out I got to ride in a first class car anyway. The only difference was that there was more room and you could get free oranges. Again, not really worth an extra 500 SEK in my opinion. In the “real” first class, my husband also got breakfast included, but it was about the same as you would get on an airplane – yogurt and weird bread.

I took a few photos out the window on my way. We finally had snow after not having any for the past few months, so the scenery was nice.

A friend asked me if there were any more differences between my second class car and the first class. I told her the first class car got to look at tropical beaches through their windows.

Is your brain stew gluten free?

For an upcoming trip to Budapest, I started looking at restaurants to visit. Generally, I’ll try a lot of things, but I think I’ll skip this place.

I’m an adult

Taco Bell does not exist in Sweden. Therefore, on our recent trip to Barcelona, I really wanted to go to one since I haven’t eaten there for 3 years.

When I was a kid, I was allowed to get a beef burrito and a small order of nachos.

Now I’m an adult and I decide for myself. So I got a beef burrito and a LARGE order of nachos.
