It still beats roaches

We had a slight bit of a scorpion problem while renting an apartment in Italy last week. However, I still prefer scorpions to giant Texas tree roaches. Scorpions somehow seem more sophisticated.

Because of my respect for the majestic scorpion, I chose to catch and release the two we found by throwing them out of our third floor window.

It was only later that I remembered there was a restaurant with outdoor seating directly below us.

No cackling!

It’s already time to look ahead to spring trips. I found a lovely apartment in Rome, but I’m a bit confused by some of the house rules:

Guests are asked not to cackle and have a decent attitude in public areas of the building; so as not to throw the cards out of the windows or anything else.

So…. no card playing witches?  Can I give a hearty laugh while in the building as long as it’s not a cackle? What type of cards can I not throw out the window? Greeting cards? Playing cards? Is this really a problem in this neighborhood?

Let’s make party

We are soon staying in an apartment on vacation through AirBnB – a website where people can rent out their apartments.  I was just checking the one we chose to learn more about the area.  The host writes:

“You have awesome possibilities to have a nice dinner, or drink something in a bar or make party. ”

Yes.  We shall make party.

Bad omen or very tired bird?

A strange thing happened to us this weekend.  We left our apartment building and came back an hour later to find a very large, dead bird in the middle of our street.  It was an unusual bird – a water type – that should have migrated weeks ago.  It was very strange to find it in front of our building and odd that none of the other people had come out and noticed it.

But here’s the weird part….

We went up to our apartment and went into the kitchen.  The kitchen window had the imprint of a bird, complete with feathers and a little blood.

So the mystery was solved of how the bird appeared dead in our road.  However, the weird thing is that we live in a big building with 36 apartments and 4 floors.  Out of all of the windows the bird could have flown into, he flew into ours and we were the people who happened to find him by coincidence.

I say it’s a scary omen meaning death or something bad.

My husband says, “A bird flew in the window.”

Garbage

I used to live in a building with a trash chute in the stairwell.  That was the greatest.  I could walk 3 steps outside my door in my pajamas and toss trash immediately into a magic chute where I never had to think about it again.

But as usual, someone in the city of Stockholm had to complain and now all new buildings have bins for trash outside of the building, while many old buildings are closing up their trash chutes and moving them outside as well.

What awful person had to ruin this for us!  It’s -15 several months out of the year here!  I really don’t have time to take on a winter coat, boots, scarf, gloves, hat, etc just to take out the trash!

Our neighbors found a way around this.  They simply leave the trash outside their door and stink up the house until they happen to be heading outside (which apparently they don’t do every day).

I’m considering building a metal slide from the 3rd floor to the outside trash chute.  I don’t think anyone would mind.  I think they would join me.
